my hands reach for you in the dark
explore the breadth of the sheet
to feel your absence chase them
back to curl round and
fold me into a ball
thrown into
an empty night
because
the sky descended in search
of a meteor rumored
to have lost its way.

do i end its quest?
will the sky take me into its arms?
will i find home among the stars
will they swirl round me like you did
when you were all the cloud
i ever wanted to be lost in?

(three nights ago)
a meteor sets its hind on fire
a projectile off to self-destruct
shoots through my window instead

of running to the ground
my room — foggy from collecting tears —
douses the meteor and I play host
to the suicidal warmth.

(the present)
when the sky runs into me —
a wandering ball in the dark
with a meteor flickering in her chest —
do I say
I’m the one you seek
or
he’s trapped in me and i in him?
